イラスト
イラストレーション(''illustration'')とは、情報を伝達するメディア (媒体)|媒体のひとつである。イラストレーションは目的に沿って描かれる絵画|絵であり、情報の図解という性格をもつ。それはマスメディアを通じて社会の中で機能することを大前提としている絵であり、グラフィックデザインの中の分野である。そのため、作家（イラストレーター）自身の世界を一貫して追求する「芸術」とは性質が異なっている。芸術としての絵画に対し、「ポピュラー美術」にあたるのが、現在のイラストレーションなのである。漫画や挿絵もイラストレーションであるが、これらはイラストレーションという呼称が普及した1960年代以前からあったため、固有の呼称が用いられている。建築物のパースである完成予想図もイラストレーションの一種である。イラストレーションは、略してイラストと呼ばれ一般化している。この呼称は日本でつくられたもので、現代 (時代区分)|現代の日本におけるイラストは単に絵を示すことが多いが、英語の''Illustration''は基本的にはその意味がない。英語の''Illustration''の元々の意味は、図解や挿絵など、印刷物の中に扱われる「図版」のことであったが、現在はさらに拡大した解釈で用いられている。''Illustration''の語源は、光沢や光を意味する''Lustre''で、同じような意味の言葉に、照らす、明るくするを意味する''Illuminate''がある。イラストを描くことを職業にしている人をイラストレーターという。
